PhD Convocation - University of Alberta

Dr. David Gordon is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta. Prior to joining the University of Alberta in January 2024, he held a Mercator Fellowship at the Teaching and Research Area Mechatronics in Mobile Propulsion at RWTH Aachen University in Aachen Germany (2023). He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2023. His research, in the area of mechatronics, focuses on both the simulation and experimental application of artificial intelligence (machine learning) strategies and optimal control to a range of power conversion systems. A wide range of applications including gasoline, diesel and Hydrogen combustion engines, electric machines and hydrogen fuel cells are considered. In addition to the model based control strategies, he has also investigated real-time in-cycle engine control taking advantage of field programmable gate arrays. Dr. Gordon has been recognized for his research contributions including receiving the Sadler Graduate Scholarship, Petro-Canada Graduate Scholarship, Alberta Graduate Scholarship, and the prestigious NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship. He has been a fundamental part of developing an international collaboration between the University of Alberta and RWTH Aachen University, ETH Zurich and the University of Freiburg resulting in him receiving a RWTH Junior Research Fellowship and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Mercator Fellowship. David is a member of IFAC, CSME, APEGA and is an active reviewer for several journals.
